The girls’ soccer team celebrated their senior night, despite the 2-1 loss to the Roybal Titans, on Feb. 2.

The night was filled with bittersweet feelings from the start as it was the team’s final home game. There was an overwhelming sense of sentimentality as it was a celebration for the seniors and the culmination of all their hard work and dedication to the soccer team.

Sheiks took the lead early on in the game, scoring a goal in the 24th minute. By halftime, the Sheiks were in the lead 1-0.

However, Roybal made a surprising comeback in the 2nd half. They scored a goal in the 62nd minute of the second half, evening the score 1-1. With seconds left, the Titans scored another goal, closing the game with a 2-1 loss for the Sheiks.

The loss, which threatened to cloud the night, did not stop the celebratory spirit.

“Obviously we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but I’m still very proud of my team,” said Valerie Jimenez, team captain, “Again, I feel like we did an amazing job out there. We don’t always win them all, but that’s okay. That’s how we learn for the next time.”

Senior night festivities began soon after the game was called. All seniors were given a chance to be honored for their efforts. Walking across the field, they were met with the gleaming smiles of their friends, families, and teammates who–along with leadership–made posters and handed out other gifts for the celebrated seniors.

“It’s honestly like such a bittersweet moment since the moment I’ve been waiting for since my sophomore year has finally came,“ said Valerie, “I’m just glad I was able to spend my senior year with so many people that I love, and I just felt all the love tonight”.

The Sheiks ended their season with a shut-out loss to Theodore Roosevelt High School 7-0 in the CIF Los Angeles City Division II play-in game, capping off the season with an 11-3-3 overall record.
