The SAS awards were held in the auditorium on May 23rd to honor students in the School for Advanced Studies SLC and their achievements throughout the year. The awards ceremony was hosted by SAS seniors John Jung and Lynda Romero.

Awards were superlatives like “Student of Integrity Award,” given to seniors Tania Gonzalez, Jessica Velasco, and Aminata Niane,  or “Awesome Attitude,” given to senior Stephanie Mateo Martinez, freshman Angel Cueto, and junior Andy Martinez. Winners had their names and pictures projected on the screen and then walked onstage to be presented with a certificate. There were two to three winners in each category. In total, around 46 students were honored at the assembly in 23 categories.

Many students were not aware that they were receiving an award at the assembly and thus it came as a shock to many of the winners. “When I got the award I felt shocked, but I was really shy going up there on the stage,” said Brianna Fonseca, SAS freshman, who got the “Excellent Effort” award.

“I was surprised,” said Michelle Grunyan, SAS freshman, winner of the “Technology Whiz” award. “Having the opportunity to receive the award, it makes you feel good, like you know your efforts actually paid off in the end.”

Awards were followed by a trivia quiz about SAS teachers.
