As girls basketball began with their first playoff game, they made an assertive first impression and clinched a win in their first game against Reseda High School by 31 points with a final score of 60-29.

“It was exciting because we had a tough season, we had fun,” said Angie Campos, senior at Reseda, power forward.

During their regular season, Lady Sheiks had an overall record of 16-2 winning 10 of their home and six away games, all this topping it off with a 12-0 Central League record.

“Me and Heidy felt really proud we were league champions and we had a really good season… “said Nadia Mendez, SAS junior, point guard and co-captain ”..we were definitely nervous but we felt prepared. After the game, it was probably the biggest win for all of us. As a team, we all played a really good game and we were excited about making round 2”

Tying with their records, they also placed 21 out of 126 schools in the CA Los Angeles City Section Girls Basketball Rankings and 7 out of 24 schools in the Los Angeles City Section Division 2 Girls Basketball Ranking.

“It’s amazing seeing all the hard work pay off,” said Megan Jimenez, TCA senior, who works as a sports manager.

Though they started off their season with a loss, they persevered and hit a six game win streak following with an eight game win streak after a second loss. What could have seemed like an unwelcome start to their season, they pushed through and proved they could make it to the playoffs.

“It’s nice seeing girl power,” said Crystal Bolanos, TCA senior, who works as a sports manager.

Up next, we wait until the Lady Sheiks face off against the Verdugo Hills Dons.
