The Seal of Biliteracy is an award or recognition for high school seniors who have attained proficiency in English, as well as a Language Other Than English (LOTE). Students are required to meet both the English Language Proficiency Requirements as well as LOTE Requirements in order to qualify and receive the Los Angeles Unified or California State Seal of Biliteracy Award.
The first step to qualify for the L. A Unified Seal of Biliteracy- English Language Proficiency Requirements, each student must pass the English Language Arts Smarter Balanced Assessment with “Standards Met” level or above. This, along with completion of all English Language Arts (ELA) graduation requirements with a 2.0+ grade point average (GPA). Otherwise, students are also able to qualify if they have passed either the English Language Arts or English Literature Advanced Placement (AP) exam with a 3+, or if they received an English Language Arts teacher recommendation.
Additionally, in order to qualify for the California State Seal of Biliteracy, each student must pass the English Language Arts Smarter Balanced Assessment with “Standards Met” level or above, and have completed all English Language Arts graduation requirements with 2.0+ grade point average (GPA), and English learners must demonstrate proficiency on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC).
Lastly, students must have taken the Advanced Placement (AP) LOTE exam with a score of 3+, or received a 600+ on the SAT II Subject Test in LOTE, or International Baccalaureate (IB) Language B exam with a 4+, or L.A Unified LOTE proficiency assessment. Students may also qualify if they have completed a four year high school course of study in the language with a 3.0 + GPA, and demonstrate oral proficiency in the language.
Students qualify no matter the second language they may be proficient in. The deadline is May 3.
