Sheiks baseball team upset Felicitas & Gonzalo Mendez High School, a Division II baseball team, on their Senior Night.

Leading up to the game, the baseball team faced bumps throughout the season with discouraging losses to Cesar Chavez High School (16-0) and Edward R. Roybal Learning Center (17-0).

“This season was filled with a lot of downs,” said SAS senior Evan Vargas, “But we fought through it. We gave it our 100 percent.”

Despite the challenges, they managed to fight through it all and snatch pivotal wins against Miguel Contreras High School (6-2) and win every matchup they had against Robert F. Kennedy High School (16-0, 13-5, 11-8).

Throughout the game, the Sheiks dominated while batting and on the outfield. Though early on many of the batters struggled to hit singles and doubles, some of the players ended up making triples and landing on base.

The Sheiks also barely allowed Mendez to steal bases and get on base in the first place. One of those highlights came from PAM junior Freddy Martinez, who caught the ball halfway across the field. Mendez barely managed to run to home base toward the bottom of the fifth inning and sixth innings.

“Towards the end, we gave it our all,” said TCA senior Brian Beltran, “I am so grateful for this season and hopefully we make it to playoffs.”

And making the playoffs can soon come true for the Sheiks stand at an overall record of 7-7 and are in third place in the Central League with a 5-5 record. They are also ranked ninth in Los Angeles City Division III and 64th in Los Angeles City Section.

“I think it was such a great time,” said TCA senior Angel Vera, “Playing with my friends was great, would’ve never done it without them.”

Like all the other seniors on the team, Vera said he “put his heart and soul” into the sport and enjoyed it a lot with all his other teammates that were pivotal to the team’s success.

To not only seal their place in the playoffs but have a high seed in the playoffs, they have to beat Contreras on Monday.

The Baseball team says goodbye to:
