The Sheiks varsity football team won their first game of the season against the West Adams Panthers on Friday, Sept. 16.
After a slow start this season, the Sheiks viciously defeated the Panthers 37-6.
“It’s my first win in the four years [I] played here,” said wide receiver and captain Brian Beltran. “There are no words to describe how I am feeling right now. My team deserved this.”
The first half started off strong with 23 points from three touchdowns and a field goal.
The Panthers ran for a touchdown in the third quarter making the score 23-6. Sheiks then responded with another rushing touchdown making the score 30-6.
The game ended with a fumble recovery by the Sheiks making the final score 37-6.
During the game, Beltran scored four touchdowns.
“I am about to cry tears of happiness,” said the football coach Alastair Jones. ”This is the first win in three years, my team played excellently and deserved to win.”
The screams and cheers of the crowd echoed across the football field. The spirit squad which consists of a dance guard, cheer, and the marching band made a comeback this game. With the absence of the marching band, earlier this season, the trio was able to perform as a unit.
“ I am so proud of the football team and I thank cheer for pumping up the crowd, said cheer captain Emily Montenegro. “The energy and school spirit today was unimaginable.”
The record for this season is now 1-2, and the Sheiks will prepare to face Wilson Mules school next Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
“The game today was amazing and everyone got to play,” said running back Adam Olayinka. “We couldn’t have done this without everyone’s cheering and help.”
