Cross country faces a bumpy start

The Sheik cross country team ran their first meet of the season on Thursday, Sept. 29 in a tiring yet fun challenge.

The meet was held at Elysian Park, where runners faced not only the 5-kilometer (approximately 3.1-mile) distance but the steep terrain, which was a big shock for all the runners.

“We can train our stamina for those hills,” said Fredy Grijalva Gomez, a SAS senior and team captain.

“Everyone did good, but everyone wasn’t expecting those hills,” said Janet Guzman, an NMA senior. “We need to practice more at Runyon Canyon.” This was her first year running with the cross country team.

All the runners worked hard from the start of the school year by conditioning on the track and Runyon Canyon.

“Extraordinarily amazing because they showed how resilient they are against adversity,” said coach Jason Powell, an English teacher. He also stated that improving the team requires “knowing the terrain, building the endurance, and building the team spirit.”

The team is preparing for its next event on Thursday, Oct. 6.
