The Grammy Awards, where more than 70 awards were given, kicked off the music industry’s biggest night on April 3. The MGM Grand Garden Arena held the 2022 Grammy Awards ceremony, hosted by Trevor Noah.

This year’s schedule of live concerts included J Balvin, Batiste, Brothers Osborne, Brandi Carlile, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, BTS, H.E.R., John Legend, Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion and Carrie Underwood.

Jon Batiste was the front-runner this year, with 11 Grammy Award nominations, tying the second place position for most nominations in one night. With eight nominations each, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. were the next most nominated artists, while Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo were tied for third with seven nominations each.

Olivia Rodrigo was nominated for all four of the “Big Four” awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. She had only won one of the “Big Four” awards, the Best New Artist, but won two Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. If she had won all four, she would have become only the third artist to win all four Grammys in the same year.

Tyler the Creator won the Best Rap Album for “Call Me If You Get Lost.” Despite not being able to perform due to his online presence recently, Kanye West with the Weeknd and Lil Baby won Best Melodic Rap Performance for their song, “Hurricane.” Bad Bunny’s album, “El Último Tour Del Mundo,” won the category of Best Música Urbana Album. Kiss Me More, sung by Doja Cat featuring SZA, won the category of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

“The performances were so fun to watch because [they held] some of my favorite artists,” said Ella Maio, SAS senior.

The Grammys isn’t new to controversy, including this year, but they had held an enjoyable event that hadn’t caused much of a riff in comparison to other years.
