Hollywood High Cheerleaders competed in their first event on March 5 at Marshall High school, one of about 13 high schools competing from the north-central league.

Cheer has experienced a rocky start this year due to Covid and their football season being cut, but members said that won’t stop them from putting their best effort and attitude on competition grounds.

Unfortunately, the team has only had one month to prepare, but they have used that time to its fullest as they practice every day from 4-6, and even on most Saturdays.

“It has been extremely tough, but the team is very committed and dedicated,” said Derrick Washington.  “The problem of competition that’s a little different than, say, for  a basketball game is that we have a lot of stunts and lifts and we need the entire team. So, if one or two people are missing, then it really affects the practice.”

The spirit of cheer has always been known to be uplifting and phenomenal. “ It feels wonderful to be a part of a team that is optimistic and encourages us to be better,” said Lannie Garcia, a SAS senior. “Even though we might be nervous, we are excited for our hard work will pay off tomorrow.”
