As a new elective, a course students are taking called “Film: The Integrated Arts” is taught by Laurie Tobenkin. Students watch movies in class and learn how to discuss and analyze film as an art form.

So far the class has seen movies such as “Modern Times,” “The Kid,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Rear Window,” “The Birds,” “Spirited Away,” and “Isle of the Dogs”. All are unique movies that can be interpreted in many different ways which makes them perfect for the film class.

“What I believe is that some movies are boring and others are entertaining; it all depends on your personal preferences,” said Victoria Luna, TCA senior.

Throughout the class different types of films and genres will be shown to students, along with their techniques.

“Let’s see in summary we’ve learned about camera shots and angles as well as what goes through a director’s mind when thinking about what scenes to include […] film techniques would be the shortened answer,” said Ashley Figueroa, SAS senior.

Along with just watching movies, students receive assignments to analyze films with worksheets, and eventually write their own film along with critiquing them. Their final for the class is to create a screenplay for a short film, along with making a movie poster.

This is the perfect course for someone who wants to have a future in the film industry or even just being a writer in general. In the class overall one can learn all the elements of film and the effort it takes to create one.

It all depends on your interests, and your love for movies. “In my perspective, I did not enjoy it, and I do not believe it is beneficial to me, but I believe it is beneficial to those who enjoy movies.” Victoria said.
