The bean and cheese pupusa had been appearing less and less on the school cafeteria menu, and now, has yet to be seen since the beginning of the school year at Hollywood High.
All throughout the months of August, September, October and November, there have been zero mentions of the pupusa in the school cafeteria menu.
Some students like junior Aminata Niane liked the school pupusa and felt that it was one of the best choices. “At this point you can’t really do much about it, but if I had a choice I’d want them to go back to their old menu, because they dropped a bunch of things like hashbrowns and fries.”
Speculation varies from a masa shortage, to it being permanently removed because it wasn’t deemed healthy enough. According to the 2021-2022 Menu Item Nutrient Analysis, the Bean and Cheese pupusa is 290 calories, 86 less calories than Yang’s Orange Chicken and Rice, which has been put into the menu at least four times since the school year started. This rules out unhealthiness as the reason for the sudden disappearance of the pupusa.
According to Karla Rosales, the cafeteria manager, the pupusa was discontinued because the vendor is changed every year. She also said, “The pupusa wasn’t very popular.”
Even if the pupusa was discontinued, maybe it’ll make its return one day.
