What are Sheiks doing this summer?

Summer vacations are right around the corner as a first full year of online learning is nearing its end. Naturally, it’s nice knowing that we’ll finally have some time to ourselves without the constant pressure that defines our academic lives. On top of that, we’re finally starting to see a gradual return to normal life with a steady decline in coronavirus cases, meaning that we’ll be able to enjoy summer in about the same way as we always have.

So, this begs the question: how are students going to be spending summer this year now that we’ll be able to do mostly anything as long as we take the proper precautions? Here are the responses of several fellow Sheiks:

“Sleeping.” – Isabella Verdia, SAS junior

“Change our generation…” – Oleg Tolmachev, SAS junior

“Live life… and find myself well.” – Danny Rodriguez, NMA junior

“Internships, open an online business…” – Josmar Samperio, TCA junior

“Go to Mexico…” – Marvin Centeno, SAS junior

“To finally relax, [go to] Six Flags, [watch] movies, hang out with friends, [make] forts, [play] video games” – Kristina Patino, SAS junior

“Work, doing [stuff] with friends, [go to] Zion National Park” – Xavier Martinez, SAS junior

That’s a pretty wide variety of activities that students will be partaking in for a second pandemic vacation; a marked contrast to last year. With most businesses closed off to the public and fewer gatherings taking place because of the COVID-19 restrictions, we were essentially trapped in our houses with nothing to do.

Some people tried to make the best out of their situation by pursuing their hobbies and hanging out with friends via social media, but it still didn’t completely save an otherwise uneventful summer vacation. It just wasn’t the same as doing stuff outside of the house.

Although last year’s summer vacation was a waste for most people, at least we have this vacation to potentially make up for it. Here’s to a much better summer vacation than last year, and we hope that we’ll have a lot more to talk about when we hopefully go back to school in person later this year!

  2. Very nice to hear that people are slowly going back to pre-COVID life. I can definitely see the increase in motivation to finally go outside and be in the real world.
