The live-action film that was scheduled to release on Mar 27, 2020, is based on Disney’s Mulan and follows a young Chinese maiden who disguises herself as a male warrior to serve in the Imperial Army instead of her ailing father.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Disney has postponed the release date of the live-action Mulan film and the date is yet to be announced.

The live-action film does not showcase all the characters and the plot does not completely follow the storyline of the 1988 Mulan animation.

“Mulan was my favorite “princess” movie,” said Jennifer Perez, NMA Senior.

There was controversy over the contents of the film because it does not include Mulan’s love interest, Li Shang. It also does not include Mushu as the sassy dragon that is portrayed in the animation but will be a realistic substitution of the character. There was greater backlash when it was announced that the movie will be replacing most of the original songs with instrumentals.

Perez siad, “I am looking forward to the movie and watching it in theaters, despite it not having the original songs.”

International controversy was sparked when Yifei Liu (actress for Mulan) was accused of supporting police brutality. The hashtag #BoycottMulan started trending from her response to the riots in Hong Kong, China. Due to the controversy Liu was not present at the 2019 D23 Expo, where fans were given an exclusive sneak peek to the movie.

The movie Mulan has gained a lot of media attention, both positive and negative, since late 2019 and is greatly anticipated.
