National Mole Day recognizes the Avogadroś number that is used in chemistry. In the United States it is celebrated between 6:02 am and 6:02 pm on Oct 23 (10/23) because the number is written as 6.02 x 10^23.
The Avogadroś number is used to define the number of atoms or molecules in one mole of a substance. A mole is a unit of measurement used in chemistry to express amounts of a chemical substance. It is important because it allows chemists to work with the subatomic world with macro world units and amounts.
Mole day originated in an article in The Science Teacher in the early 1980s and inspired by this article, the National Mole Day Foundation was founded on May 15, 1991.
