Starting from Friday through Sunday, the NBA All-Star weekend was one to remember. Friday started off with the celebrity basketball match, Snoop Dogg team v. 2 Chainz team, hosted in DTLA in the 747 Warehouse for the Adidas event. Performances included Rich The Kid, Torrey Lanez, and N.E.R.D.
Saturday was the slam dunk contest, 3 point contest, and the skill challenge. Donavan Mitchell from the Jazz won the slam dunk contest and Larry Nance Jr. from the Cavaliers was runner-up. SDevin Booker from the Suns won the 3 point contest and Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors was the runner-up. Spencer Dinwiddie won the skills challenge for the guards after consecutive wins by the Big Men in the past all star weekends.
The All Star was a different game than NBA fans are usually used to. This time around the winning team got $100,000 and losing team got $50,000. The format was also changed in which the two individuals with the most votes were able to draft whomever they wanted. The purpose to make the game more competitive with higher amounts of defense.
The newly founded structure of the All Star game without a doubt resulted in a highly competitive game. The game started out with Fergue singing the national anthem, and was ridiculed on the internet for her voice cracking, and was the highlight of the evening. Team Lebron won Team Steph with a score of 148-145 with the final ten seconds having fans on the edge of their seats. The band, N.E.R.D, performed alongside Pharrell Williams with Migos performing their collaborative single “Stir Fry”.
The All-Star weekend was a perfect display of the NBA’s finest.
